Thorold, ON - Americans stormed the Internet in heavy numbers during election night to search for housing in Canada. Rentboard Canada - a Canadian rental housing website - reported that the start of increased traffic results from the U.S. coincided with the closing of the first polls. By 9pm, U.S. visitors were dominating the website.
"The election numbers were barely in and traffic was already starting to spike," says Brent Daviduck, President of Rentboard, "By midnight, we were seeing 57% more active users on the website than we normally see during our midday peak periods."
Daviduck went on to add that U.S. traffic typically accounts for about 4% of daily traffic, but on the day after the election, Americans accounted for 62.6% of all visits. Many Americans have also been calling, asking about the rental climate in Canada and how to go about renting in this country.
Toronto was the most visited city showing a 568% increase in traffic while Edmonton, Vancouver and Calgary also showed strong traffic increases. The majority of visitors originated from cities believed to be Clinton strongholds. New York City, Chicago, LA, Washington, DC and Detroit accounted for 17.6% of all the visitors. Overall, Rentboard has seen visitors from 1,969 different American cities on Nov 9th alone. Other Canadian rental housing listing websites also reported significant American based traffic, including Renthello.com.
Landlord Web Solutions (LWS), a web marketing and data analytics company, has been watching the lead volumes from listings sites across Canada and so far, actual lead numbers are in the normal range.
"It would seem Americans are doing a lot of window shopping at the moment and we don't see much evidence of inquiries to landlords being made yet," notes Jason Leonard, President of LWS, "We'll be keeping a close eye on this to see if Americans do actually get serious about moving to Canada."
